Empowering Youth Through Investigative Journalism for Primate and Rainforest Conservation in the Mentawai Island

Dr. Rizaldi, M.Sc - Dept. Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Andalas

This project aims to empower Indonesian university students to become conservation advocates for the endangered Mentawai Islands. Pulitzer Center reporting, including The Threat to Four Endemic Primates and the Biodiversity of Sipora Island will be foundation reading material for students in workshops and to critically analyze the current state of the primates on Mentawai Island.

Further, students will also visit Sipora Island to document rainforest conditions firsthand. They will create advocacy materials - articles, videos, social media content, etc. - culminating in campus exhibitions and outreach campaign.

The project strives to bridge academic knowledge with action, equipping youth to become informed advocates for Southeast Asia's threatened rainforest ecosystems.

Voice for the Forest - Youth Jorunalism for Conservation

Field
Coverage

This activity was held from Wednesday to Friday, August 20-22, 2025, in Sipora, Mentawai Regency, involving five students from Universitas Andalas, namely Afifah Abdul Rahman, Nadya Putri Kristianda D., Rahmat Sarkani Aipama, Salsabil, and Dimas Alfarroz.

The visit was also accompanied by Febriyanti (TEMPO journalist), Robert Choi Sakambotu, M.Pd (Matobe Indigenous Community, Sipora), Matheus (Matobe Indigenous Community, Sipora) and Jaka HB (Mongabay Indonesia journalist).

During this three-day visit, the team visited the Uma Goiso Oinan Customary Law Community (MHA) to search for primate roosting sites, understand the vegetation, and learn about the various types of plants used by the local community in their daily lives.

Toek cultivation is a local culinary culture that has become a form of social food security driven by women and can apparently be used as a bioindicator of clean water. The team then visited a logpond in the Land Management Forest (HPL) area, which is the location of logging activities and is estimated to be home to four of the six endemic primate species in Mentawai.

Finally, the team visited the Fish Auction Site (TPI) in Tuapejat. This is the official place for fishermen to sell their catches openly and transparently, from where marine products are distributed to markets and then to the community.

The

Workshop

Voice for the Forest - The Workshop was held on Friday and Sunday, October 3-4, 2025, at the American Corner of the Universitas Andalas Central Library, involving 17 students from various majors, including biology, language and culture, agriculture, and international relations.

The participants received training from five speakers: Ayu Rachmawati, M.Sc from the Communication Studies Program at Padang State University, discussed “Environmental Journalism” as a medium for social change and ecological awareness. Robert Choi Sudarno Sakombatu, M.Pd., representative of the Uma Baca Jaraik Literacy Community, Sipora, Mentawai Islands, who was also a speaker at a public lecture at the Department of Biology entitled “Mentawai Past, Present, and Future: Local Perspectives on Nature and Culture.” During the session, Robert described the Mentawai people's spiritual connection with nature and the challenges of preserving traditions amid modern changes.

After a short break, the workshop continued with a presentation by Febrianti, an environmental journalist, on the topic of “The Impact of Deforestation on the Sea in Mentawai,” explaining the link between forest destruction and the decline of coastal ecosystems. Dr. Rizaldi, M.Sc., a primate expert from the Department of Biology, presented about “Infographics and Posters for Primate Conservation,” emphasizing visual communication as a means of advocacy. Wulan Fauzanna, S.S., M.EIL., Ph.D. from the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, presented “Framing Environmental Issues: A Linguistic Perspective,” which reviewed the role of language in shaping public awareness of language in reporting on the environment.

The second day of the event focused on group work to develop environmental communication materials that combined scientific, cultural, and visual approaches. The resulting works included an article about Mentawai that highlighted the community's philosophy of maintaining the balance of nature, an infographic about the condition of endemic primates and the impact of deforestation in the Mentawai rainforest. Conservation campaign posters with messages advocating for the conditions in Mentawai, such as “Save Simakobu, Save Mentawai” and “Sustainable Forests, Protected Primates.” Short videos lasting 2-3 minutes highlighting ecological changes and messages of environmental conservation. These works were presented to the speakers and received appreciation for their creativity and sharp environmental messages.

The
Exhibition

Voice for the Forest - The Exhibition was held on Monday and Tuesday, October 27-28, 2025, at Building B of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, held in conjunction with the Photo Exhibition - The Web of Life Culture Ecology and the Sentient Forest of Mentawai as a form of collaboration between the Department of Biology and the Department of Anthropology Universitas Andalas.

The Photo Exhibition was held as part of the Mentawai Ethnography course taught by Dr. Maskota Delfi, M.Hum, a specialized course designed to enable students to visit Mentawai, produce scientific papers, and publish them, sometimes in the form of seminars or exhibitions such as this year event.

In this collaborative exhibition, we displayed 10 posters and infographics created by participants of the workshop held on October 3-4, 2025, namely: Poster “Jaga Sipora, Sipora Jaga Kita” by Dimas Alfarozz, “Nikmati dan Jaga Anggau” by Jefrial, “When the Forest Disappears” by Nur Azis Ariansyah, “Mentawai - Rimba yang Bernafas” by Rimba Salsabila Zahara, “Legal Kayu, Illegal Untuk Primata” by Sah Putra Adrian, “Toek dan Perempuan Sipora” by Nadya Putri Kristianda, “Antara Jerih dan Syukur” by Zumiratin Najmi. An infographic “Simakobu - The Hidden Treasure of Mentawai” by Leo Saputra and two e-posters “Benteng Mentawai” by Salsabila, dan “Local Wisdom - Jahe-jahean (Zingiberaceae) Masyarakat Sipora” karya Rahmat Sarkani Aipama, that also posted on our social media platform.

At the same time, the team exhibited 20 photos that were considered meaningful and capable of conveying messages about the environmental and cultural conditions in Mentawai. These photos were curated from a variety of photos collected by our field team during the implementation of the program since 2023. The photos were grouped into three main concepts: “Community, Forest, and Wildlife of Mentawai,” each accompanied by a brief narrative to reinforce the intended message.
